Anode Rod & Plumbers Tape

When wrapping plumbers tape around an anode rod, I read that it is supposed to go on clockwise. From what angle is that? From when looking over the top of the rod? Or from when looking along the length of the rod from the non-threaded end to the threaded end?

Sorry, but I tend to over-analyze things!

Figure somebody knows...

Thanks!

  • Easiest way to explain it is do it wrong enough (you will know when its wrong) you figure it out :)
  • Trying to explain which direction to wrap tape on the threads of a plumbing fitting with out a visual is like trying to explain an elephant to a group of blind folks. I'm refering to the old example of communicating used in many text books, I'm not saying the blind are stupid. Creato gave the simplist example in my opinion. Simple and concise. I have to think about it every time I use thread tape and I have been doing it since tha stuff came out.
  • X2 Creato. Easiest description! Wrap it so it pulls tighter as you screw it in.
  • The tape will be wrapped clockwise in relation to the male threads when looking at the end of the male threads (counter clockwise on the threads in relation to the hole it is threading into).

You want it wrapped so that as you turn the fitting into the mating hole the tape will not try to unwrap as you start to thread it.

Easiest way is to hold the anode rod portion in the left hand and wrap the tape over the top towards your body and then around under the threads away from your body then back over the top and around again.
  • Been using anti-seize on the rod for years, no leaks, easy to remove.

  • One wrap is enough. I just flushed our water heater but used yellow putty for rv's.

  • Wrap it on so that when you thread it in the tape dosnt unwrap.
  • As yo view it when installed, the tape should have been wrapped counter clockwise. So you'll probably be looking at the anode end while your wrapping right? Wrap it clockwise when viewing from the anode end.
