awning stick? reacher? dumb question

New to RVing, i notice other folks have a metal stick with a 90* bend at one end to assist in getting the awning up and down. my used TT did not come with one. For the life of me i cant find where to buy one because I dont think im searching the right name. I have a camping world right down the road but cant find it on the website.

  • Very often, when traveling, I will find an awning rod laying on the ground left from the previous camper...along with water restrictors, wheel chocks, and other assorted and miscellaneous rv stuff.:S

It is a fairly thick gauge metal, such as #10 steel rod. Tempered so it will not lose it's shape, easy to make your own from supplies at the local hardware store. You might try buying 18" long aluminum flat stock, and then bolt on a 1/4-20 bolt about 3/4" long to one end. It will work to unlatch the top latch, and gently pull down the awning strap.

why buy the stuff to make one when you can walk right in to Camping World and buy one off the shelf for only $5.69 pull rod
just my opinion but just buy one
  • Keep checking around the trailer. You might find that the prior owner put the awning pull rod in one of the compartments, and you just did not see it, or it might have slid farther under the trailer storage area, to where it can not be seen from the outside.

Remember when putting the awning away, to gently let it go up while hanging onto the pull down strap. Failure to do so might result in the awning shutting to quickly, then the strap being wrapped up inside, without being able to see it the next time you need to pull down the awning.

Lol. Every new awning comes with a new pull rod. My used trailer originally came with a pull rod and no awning -- they threw in a new awning with my purchase -- I then had two pull rods. A year or so later, I learned not to leave the awning out and up during a severe thunderstorm -- I, too, now have three awning pull rods.

here is the part your asking about pull rod
just go into Camping World and ask them for this, they will know exactly what you are talking about.
  • It's called an awning pull rod or awning opener. You will find it at Amazon if you search those terms.

    Here's one at Camping World.
