Battery not charging while driving

I have a Dutchmen travel trailer. When I drive down the road, the camper battery (new deep charge battery) does not charge. When I plug it in to shore power, the battery charges. I arrived at the campground today after a long drive, and found the camper battery dead. Any suggestions?

  • On my Ford I had to install a fuse and relay (included) to get the charge line to work.

  • yep, i had to put in a fuse on my silverado as well.

Get a volt meter and check the top right pin on truck end of the plug.

If its showing voltage on the truck plug work your way down the line to your trailers inverter and make sure no wires are frayed

As mentioned some TV require a relay to be added, I believe it is Gen Motors. Fords come ready to go if it has the tow package. :)

And my '05 Avalanche and '06 Silverado only required the installation of a 30 amp fuse in Stud #2 in the underhood fuse panel ... and AFAIK no GM requires the installation of any relay since that charge line once activated is hot all the time, unlike Ford which activates the charge line through the ignition. The point is that no two vehicles are the same so it's impossible to answer the OP's question when he won't even tell us the make / model / year of vehicle he has. :R

  • NO Tow Vehicle stated.

some makes have you install a relay to the truck fuse box.

others have you install a 20 or 25 amp Fuse.

when I purchased my Used Ford last summer. the trailer battery fuse in truck fuse box was blown... replaced it and all is good.

and NO not all truck to trailer lines are trickle charges.. mine will do 20 amps to trailer battery. YES I tested it.

Battery won't charge if you don't have an active charge line - i.e. 12 volts on Pin 4 of your vehicle's Bargman connector, relative to ground on Pin 1. Have you measured it with a DVM?

  • you don't list what your tow vehicle is.
it may not have the wire live for charging, in the 7 pin connector.

and your tow vehicle will only provide a trickle charge at best.
so it won't recharge a depleted battery unless you drive for hours.
