I think what you want to do is fine -- travel the way that works best for you! We've left our rig on the other end of the country a few times -- expensive, yes, but less hassle than driving across country x 2. One summer I parked in a farmer's shed all summer for $125 -- great deal.
A lot of storage places will quote you a short term rate -- I've done it for as little as three days. Also, many RV parks have storage areas also -- KOA's seem to do this a lot. Leave your rig, taxi to the airport, etc. I'd be less comfy leaving my rig at an airport -- too many creeps around them.
