Buying from a dealer vs private sale

So Ive been looking for a nice used TT, and I have noticed that dealer pricing is often times a couple thousand more than buying from a private individual. I understand the dealers overhead and costs, but is there any reason to buy from a dealer vs private sale?

Good Sam Life members get a free annual inspection I believe, and 1 year roadside is $69. You will more than make that up not paying tax when you buy from a private party. Plus you have much more negotiating power with a PP.
    Good luck with your decision.

Are those "free" services worth a few thousand dollars to you?

  • We looked at used trailers at a well-known chain - NO warranty, even for a year-old model.
And yeah, they didn't even clean them up.
  • As mentioned, a dealer may or may not offer a warranty. And, a dealer can assist with financing. The dealer may clean the unit a little better than a private individual.

The private seller will know how to work the systems in the TT.
A dealer salesperson may or may not know how to work everything.

To me, there is no reason to buy from a dealer unless they have something I really want. If a private seller can offer the same unit for less money, I'll buy where I get the best deal.

If you read the forum you will know there are people who bought new units with a warranty and are having difficulty getting repairs made by the selling dealership. Just because a unit is new does not mean it has no problems.

If you are satisfied with a deal from a private individual, buy the TT and save some money. JMO
  • I,VE seen a lot of used rigs on a dealer lot far from clean,, I,ll take a private sale any day, owner sellers you can talk to and find out everything they,ve ever done to it. people like to tell how they did things ,.most owner sellers will have it in great shape. a dealer cares about nothing but money. and no,s nothing of the history of the used rv,s on there lot.
  • Do dealers have better financing terms on used models than I might see if I went through my local bank? I checked today and my bank is something like 8% for up to 5 years for used models under $20,000. My wife and I have excellent credit and own our home,so I wouldn't think it would be a problem
  • In my experience, a dealer make take more time cleaning it up. Not that they'll guarantee anything, but they do want them looking spiffy. Not so much from private sales.
