CAA/AAA for roadside assistance

Next summer, I am planning a trip across Canada and the USA.

While I feel confident that my trailer and tow vehicle, I want to get roadside assistance as a "just in case".

Anyone here have CAA or AAA and used it?
  • We have AAA/RV+ and recently attempted to use it while traveling. AAA in the state we live in transferred me to the state we were visiting. That state AAA rep explained they could not help and was on our own for repairs. He also explained to keep my receipts and try to get refunded. Fortunately we were meeting friends at this location and they stopped to pick up items to make my repairs. I have been with AAA for many years but just last year started RVing. I will do more research to learn how to better utilize AAA since until this occurrence they have been very helpful close to home. I will also research other options.
  • I have CAA RV plus coverage and have been pleased with the service. Have needed it for one flat tire in Smothers, BC,a battery boost, and a starter issue.

I would be careful with this type of service. Read the fine print to make sure that you have the option to cancel the policy if you no longer need it for what ever reason.

We have CAA and are more than happy with their service which we have used twice.
  • I have CAA and used it a few years back to have the camper flat bedded from just South of Sudbury on a Sunday afternoon after a bearing blew out and nearly lost the tire.

After making a call we had to wait a few hours for the right rig to be available but they kept in constant contact with me via text and eventually a low deck showed up and towed the trailer all the way to Barrie where I parked the rig at my BIL's place.

I can say without a doubt that the dispatchers for CAA were great and they showed up with the right truck in basically the middle of Nowhere Ontario on Highway 11 on a Sunday. Worth every nickle!

BTW since I have learned and carry two sets of bearing with me so I won't have a repeat of that. Can R&R a bearing in less time than it took the truck to show up ;)
  • We have CAA coverage, it has saved our butt a few times. Like last summer when we had a blowout and no lug wrench (it was on the shop bench when we got home).:S
  • We have been with AAA for over 40 years, but a few years back we have to try to use our AAA/RV+ in a state where there is little or no AAA presence. They were useless at providing assistance. They did, however, reimburse us for most of the expenses. We fortunately had a native guide to get us the assistance we needed to get back underway.

  • Experience with AAA/RV in CA, would not cover RV member from other state. Each state has its own coverage rules.

  • We have been AAA members for 19 years. We had AAA Plus with RV for the past 10 years. We have used it twice to tow both the TV and our Hybrid TT (when we owned it). We also used it once to put a spare on our motorhome when it had a blowout. We've used AAA many times for non-RV related roadside assistance.

We have had a great experience with AAA. All three times we have used it for the RV, we have had to wait up to a few hours, but AAA has always taken care of us. We live on the East Coast and travel on the east coast. AAA on the east coast has never let us down. Different regions offer different levels of service. We've used our AAA outside our region and have never had an issue. I have heard others in other parts of the country complain that AAA is not good in their area.

Determine where you plan to go and find out what AAA covers in those areas. You may find they aren't great in the areas you plan to visit. If you plan to stay along the east coast of the US, you should have no problems with them.
