I don't know if 5 gallons is a magic number. I buy the biodegradable chemical drop-in packets. You can get them at Wal-Mart. No fuss or mess. Drop one in the toilet, fill the bowl with water and then flush. Now you are ready to use the toilet.

Allow a little extra water to run into the toilet with each flush. I also use Happy Bowl toilet liners Works well and keeps the toilet clean. Use as little paper an necessary and make sure it is RV certified. It is the paper that will clog the pipes.

Then of course the key is to have the tank at least half full if not more when you dump. If you haven't used the toilet that much add water before you dump. It is the force of the water that empties the tank. After dumping, put in another chemical pouch before you leave the campground and you should be good to go.

It's a holding tank so when it's almost full you dump it. It doesn't. Need anything but water. Put water in the bowl, do your thing and then flush it away.
I knew some grand kids that used more paper then water and that's not good. Now that she has two little ones in her TT she knows better.

Some folks obsess over the RV toilet. I have never put anything in mine other than a little water after dumping and some deodorizer along with fabric softener (wife corrected me). I would try it out with at least some water before your female guest joins you.

Yes, pour 5 gallons of water into the toilet before you start to use it.

Some use chemicals. Some use only water. Some use The Geo Method.

Don't dump the black tank until it's about 3/4 full.

After you dump, pour in 5 gallons and add whatever chemicals you chose.

I would try the toilet at home before you go boondocking, make sure it's working properly.
