I sanitize the water tank and water system in my camper each spring. That is simple - around 1 cup or less of bleach poured into the freshwater tank, fill the tank, run all the faucets and toilet, let sit for an hour, empty everything and run clean water through.
I use the white drinking water hose to fill the freshwater tank, and use them at campgrounds with water supply. I don't sanitize the water spigot at campgrounds - but I understand people that do. Someday I might start doing that.
The white drinking water hose (available Walmart and most places) doesn't give that rubber water hose flavor to the water.
We don't drink directly from the water system of our camper - we use a Brita water filter jug for better taste. I've never been able to get the plastic taste out of our camper's water system.
I used to always hookup an inline water filter to my camper's water hose when using campground water. When we started using the Brita filter jug I stopped using the outside filter.
As with any town water system or house well water, every so often you might run into a campground with water that tastes or smells "odd", but is safe to drink and use. Actually, I am used to the well water at my house, so "city water" usually has an overwhelming chlorine smell and taste to me. It may be clean, but it can be overpowering. (A close friend is the manager for the nearby city water system, so I have to be careful making fun of city water... ;) )
Don't over think the water system on your camper or at campgrounds - the only time I've heard of people having serious water problems is from reading a rare thread here on this forum. No one I know personally has had water issues.
