Dry camping

Some of the sites I will be staying in will have no hookups, and I am there for 4-5 days. Where do I go to fill water tanks, empty gray/black tanks?
  • As 2gypsies says, unless you have very small tankage; if you use water conservation techniques 4-5 days for 2 people should not be a problem. On the
electric side a pair of 6v golf cart batteries and conservative use of lighting and you will be good.

We are able to comfortably dry camp with our two 6-volt batteries for up to a week. No solar or generator necessary.
  • Conserve and you should easily go five days unless ya got six or eight people .
  • For 4-5 days: Fill the water at your previous stop then if you conserve you can go the 4-5 days without having to refill. When you leave, your park might have a dump station. If not, here's some help:

    Some help with conserving:

Don't let the water run when washing hands; showering; brushing teeth

Take paper plates and you don't have to do dishes at every meal and perhaps not even every day.

Do dishes in a dishpan and use that water for flushing the toilet.

    Grill outdoors

Showers: Catch the water in a jug when trying to regulate the water temperature. It's clean water so use it for dishes, etc. Do a quick wet down. Turn off water. Soap up. Do a quick rinse. It's amazing how little water you'll need.

Good luck. You can do it!!

  • Ask around when you get there.
Many private campgrounds will let you dump and fill for a fee.
  • Dry camping is completely different than full-hook-up camping.... Much of what we do is dry-camping, so for us, we've perfected it to fit our needs.

    1) Water - Many start by hauling 5-gallon water jugs, but I found a 40-gallon water bladder at Camping World that is designed to drain my gravity to your tank. Instead, I rigged a 12v pump that is supplied by the trailer hitch jack on the truck. This allows me to fill completely every couple of days, instead of it being a daily chore.

    2) Dumping - Only three possible answers that I know of....
    a) Blue Tote
    b) Avoid using your facilities, and use CG facilities instead
    c) many CG's will pump your tank, or have a vendor do it, for a fee

    3) Electric - Generator, solar, or combination of both.

Hope that this helps!!!! We get to see a LOT that we wouldn't otherwise get to see, because we've mastered dry-camping. Don't miss the adventure, strictly because you become dependent on hook-ups!
