Dumb question concerning on board water tank

I have a really dumb question about the on board water tank. How to I get bleach or other water treatments into the water tank? I feel stupid asking but it's just not coming to me. Also, the person I bought my camper from says they always used the city water connection and never used the on board water tank. Other than sanitizing it, is there anything else I should do for a water tank that hasn't been used in a long time?

Thanks.

  • My camper is a 1998 Dutchmen Aristocrat 24FL-D. I believe it has two water inlet connections, city water and fresh water. I wasn't sure if just using a funnel on the fresh water port would get it into the tank. I didn't know if it needed to be pumped in with a drill pump or something.
  • I used to remove the filter cartridge and pour Clorox into the housing to get into system.

  • I also use the hose method as it also helps to sanitize it along with the rv tank/plumbing.

  • No question is dumb if you don't know the answer.

    If in doubt; keep asking!
  • It might help if we knew what rig you have. Not all have gravity fill ports and many have filters that should be removed.

If you have a drinking water filter - usually found under the kitchen sink, you should remove it first. That is true no matter which method you use to add the bleach. Some systems require a plug to be used if the filter is removed, some do not.

If you have a full-house filter (found in the water bay) you can use it's canister to add the bleach. If you have a gravity fill port, you probably don't have to remove this filter.

If there is a gravity fill port that should be you easiest method.

If no gravity fill port, then there will be a valve to fill the tank through the city water connection. That can be used one of two ways.

If there is a full-house water filter.
      Remove the canister
Remove the filter from the canister.
Add the bleach to the canister
      Reinstall the canister.
Fill the tank trough the city water connection (after setting the valve to fill the tank.)

If no full-house water filter, then add the bleach to the empty hose, then connect the hose and fill the tank.

BTW, it's not a bad idea to sanitize the hose occasionally, I do it once a year. The latter method will do that. Of course, one can just pour bleach into the hose and then flush.

  • Many people never use the tank ,is it because they believe that the campground water is safer , better tasting . They will buy water from an unknown source and feel it is safer than the water from their home system ?I do not quite get their fear . I never hook up to a campgrounds water unless i have to !

With a funnel...carefully...through the filling port. There's some slick funnels in the auto parts section of Wally-K-mart-Target with a LONG tube on the bottom...works great!

(This assumes there's a filling port- I know some folks have automatic things that branch off of the "city water hookup", my camper is not that fancy).

I guess if it's never been used, you might check to see if any bugs or gunk runs out of the tank- and if so, might quadruple bleach and rinse multiple times sorts of things.

Also, if it's never been used, I might be slightly afraid if the water pump will work.

All that being said, I would not worry too much...just check it and see.
  • There should be a "water fill" outlet, probably somewhere on the side of your rig, that you use to fill the on-board fresh water tank. That would be where to put your bleach / treatment. I would look online for videos that explain the process and the right amount of chemicals.
  • Use the gravity fill connection and a funnel with a hose to pour bleach solution into the fresh water tank. In two years of owning our TT, we have only used the water pump to suck antifreeze into the lines.
