E-ZPass on an RV with and without Toad

We are New Yorkers about to take possession of our first motorhome. Yippee! We have an E-ZPass tag on each of our cars and love the convenience.

So, now the question is, how does it work with an RV? Do they have special E-ZPass tags for RVs? What do you do if you are towing a car, does it include the toad? I poked around on the NYS E-ZPass page and didn't see any information there.

I did see on the forums some people complaining that the mylar bags that are supposed to keep E-ZPass tags from being read sometimes don't work. Has anyone found a sure fire solution for that?

Thanks. I love this Beginning RVing forum!

Thanks Old-Biscuit. Now why is this form on the NY Thruway website and not the E-ZPass website? Gotta love New York State's way of doing things!

because it is a thruway form. The question should be why ez-pass does not have it on their site.

NY got it right if you take a moment to think about it.

Right... The motorhome plan and other discounts on the form are extended by the NYS Thruway Authority, not E-ZPass. It does seem like the E-ZPass folks could at least link to the form though.

Dutch_12078, Thanks for the link to the form! I'm on it! So, if I read this right, my RV with a towed vehicle are both covered by the E-ZPass tag in the RV. And the rate for the RV/Towed car combination is the same as a normal passenger car?

That's correct, the RV tag covers both vehicles when the toad is in tow. Assuming your coach has two axles, you'll be charged the same rate as a passenger car towing a two axle trailer. If you have a tag axle, the rate would be the same as a passenger car towing a 3 axle trailer.
  • Anyone know about any other state's policies? Particularly NJ, Md and Va?

    My understanding is this:

    MH has a transponder
    Toad has a transponder

MH when towing toad.....MH transponder used (Toad transponder placed in special bag to prevent it being read).
MH with toad is then charged appropriate rate for MH & toad.

    Here is some info/form........LINK
    OR call 1-800-333-8655

    Dutch provided same form :B

Print out this form, fill it out and send it in with a copy of your registration to get a motorhome tag that qualifies you for the NYS Thruway motorhome plan. You'll be charged the same per axle rate as passenger cars on the NYS Thruway. Other states don't all extend any discount for it, but a couple of them seem to. I haven't had any problems with the toad tag tucked away in the mylar bag in the glove box, but you could also wrap it in aluminum foil for more shielding.
