I did not read all the posts, but here's some thoughts, hope this is not a repeat from someone else.
Cruise America is not cheap to rent any RV. And if you're looking at a month, you might want to explore other options.
In addition to the RV, you'd need bed linens, bath towels, dishes, plates, pots and pans and all of that too. If you are renting one-way, and you purchase these items, what will you do with them when you fly back East?
Cruise America has packages you can also (rent), pots and pans, bed linens, stuff like that too, but this also adds to the price.
I think as one suggested above, renting cabins along the way, or even tent camping may be a more financial way to do it. However, you still have the problem of disposing of all that stuff once you reach your destination and fly back. If you drive your own car, what do you do with the car when you fly back. If you rent an automobile, you still have to deal with all that "stuff" when you fly back.
It's just something to think about.
If money is not the issue, renting all that stuff is determinately a good way to go.
About your fears? By the time you drive that camper through 2/3rd of this country and reach those mountains, you'll BE a seasoned driver.
If your renting a Class-C, Cruise America will also give you contact numbers and information in the event of mechanical failure. Just make sure you have a cell phone!
