I did paraphrase, but it is a true story.

Or have to go on an unexpected late night dog outing and don't want to wake your neighbors with "OOWWWW... Son of a b**** that hurt!!!" when you walk into the picnic table or power post in the dark. (yes I have a flashlight but with two dogs it can't point everywhere at once)
As someone suggested, put LED bulbs in.....much whiter & brighter light..... don't know who leaves them on all night, but nice to have when something unusual goes bump in the night and you can flip on the switch to light things up and look out the window to see what is going on.
I have nice bright LEDs and feel badly when I flip them on during the night, but then I consider the alternative.
Dave - wa8yxmExplorer IIIWell many Nocternal animals will be scared by the light if you wilderness camp or camp in areas they frequent.. So they are properly named
But one CG I stay at is over 700 Cites. I mean it is a city for all purposes and intents (in fact the township I grew up in had 700 Residents in the township exclusive of the village and 700 more in the village and is well known to RVers as it is ... Tekonsha (Think Prodigy P3). Company CEO at one point was a former classmate of mine.
So people leave their SCARE lights on all night.. STUPID The "Nocternal" creatures in that park (One described in an earlier post) are not scared.
THough that one was...after the fact.. .when he got to see himself on video. - 2012ColemanExplorer II

Who's being "scared" by the scare lights? We had a theft at our seasonal site over the summer. Around 2:30 am, someone walked into the campground from the main road, about 1/8th of a mile, passed the first row, second row and third row. They settled on a site that was 3 in from the main campground road on the 4th row to steal a bicycle. Ironically, the very first site in the first row also had a bicycle that was ignored.
Why? The site that had the bicycle stolen was bright enough to land small aircraft. The site that didn't have the bicycle stolen has no light. Light only helps a thief see what is available to steal.

- hussbussExplorerThe clear lens on the scare lites produce the brightness because of the chrome housing. If you want to dull them down, go to any school bus garage and buy some yellow lens that are used for the directional lights. Exact same lens. Also won't attract the bugs. I did this with last TT. New TT does not have them.

Some years ago the campground where I spend about half my Summer put up video cameras and BIG signs "This area under video surveillance"
Some Bicycles came up missing.
The assistant manager reviewed the recording
There is a sign on the wall next to the bike rack.
What I saw
The assistant manager a Grandfather and Grandson reviewing the tape
Manager was looking official
Grandpa... Very unhappy
Grandson... Very.. er.. contrite.
They pulled out after the review.. I suspect Grandson was not all that comfortable sitting there in granddad's truck. Even if the seat is padded. - troubledwatersExplorer III

What the heck is a 'Scare Light' anyway????
Scare lights are what other campers that are too lazy to close their own blinds complain about on RV websites...... SidecarFlip wrote:

The Scare Light is the big round (about 8-9 inches) WHite light on the side of many RV's. it takes a 11256 (25 to 29 watt) lamp making it the brightest light in the RV.. Most porch lightes only take a 20 watt or smaller. It is designed to scare away things that threaten the RV like burglers or bears I guess so they call it a scare light. Absolutly useless far as I'm concerned and I've parked in bear country. A TAC-LIGHT flashlight is every bit as good.. I've used, not one of those but a lesser larger flashlight to good effect in the past (And there in lies a longer story but I'll omit) Taught a bunch of folks a major lesson the next morning.
