Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for the many responses. What an amazing group this is! I am so excited to have found all of you.
You all have shored up my resolve to do this trip. I think, though, that I am going to alter my timeframe to allow myself more time: More time to get experience with renting an RV, more time to research and plan, and more time to Save Money!!
This is what I am going to do:
Take the boys in a rented RV over spring break somewhere not TOO far away but fun. This will give us a nice long-ish window to try out a campground, learn how to hook up stuff and operate an RV etc. The weather will be more seasonal for our first time camping also.
I will spend the next year planning for our cross-country trip, which we will plan to take NEXT summer (2015.) This was my son's idea and I think it is a great idea. We can also spend some time researching RVs and who knows, maybe we will even end up getting our own. My van has 130k miles on it now and my son will be using it to drive a year from now, so I'll be looking to get a vehicle then. Who knows? I may end up with something that could pull a fifth wheel! It seems like used fifth wheels aren't too outrageously expensive.
If we do go in a rented rv, my plan would be to stock it with dishes, cookware, linens etc from a Goodwill and then just redonate the stuff when we arrive at our end destination.
Again, I want to thank all of you. I will definitely be spending a lot of time on these boards over the next year and a half. I have a lot to learn!!
