I just started camping in January. Have been 7 times. While I do plan to eventually have family vacations across the country, We are in no way ready to do that. In 7 camping trips, 3 have been within 5 miles of the house, 4 have been within 1:15 hours of the house. I find camping has a hard learning curve.
Having said that, maybe you can rent once and then do it? Other campers are very helpful. We obviously looked like newbies and a few times I didn't even have to ask for help... They came over and offered.
Plus, if it really gets bad, you could stay in a hotel for a night... Or every other night, etc. it's not like you are going to die. It could just get uncomfortable for a few hours. You might get off schedule by a day or half a day.
