Extended warranty

Are extended warranties worth the money? We are probably buying a Jayco with a 2 year warranty. Any reason to go beyond that?

Most RV manufactures have only a 1 year warranty bumper to bumper although frames, roof, appliances etc. usually have much longer warranties. I didn't care too much for the Jayco's in my weight and price point. My 5'er had a 1 yr warranty. I bought an extended for peace of mind. I would not have done so at the original asking price for it or even close to it. Dealers try to mark it up heavily.

I've had minor repairs done that the warranty has already paid for. Items were the same on most other trailers so nothing to do with RV manufacture. As such I'm losing faith with Dometic!
  • Chances are that if you put the money aside that the extended warrantee costs at the end of the period you will still have most of that money.

Those extended warrantee companies don't exist by paying out on claims for the customers benefit.
  • Thanks guys. I was only considering it because we will be living in it and using it daily. I never take it on electronics or anything else. I think I'll take a pass and do my own repairs.

Apoplectic, I had to look that one up. Thanks, I learned something today.
  • Read the fine print, if you buy a 3 year extended warranty in 2015 on an RV that already has a 2 year manufacturers warranty, then you will only be covered on your extended warranty for 2018 or 1 year! You are paying for 3 and getting only 1 year. And they will find many ways to deny your claim! We bought one ONCE and have never done it again. Now, I just save my pennies and do my own repairs when I can. If you were serious about the extend warranty, get it just before your regular warranty ends. By then you will have probably changed your mind as most repairs are done during the first year. Not much goes wrong after that. Good luck
  • Read it VERY carefully. Just camped next to a couple with an extended warranty on their 2014/15 Funzion 5th wheeler. Impressive looking merchandise with an above ground terrace and garage/office/toy hauler. They were apoplectic that the roof leaked over their king size bed and both the manufacturer and extended warranty company were adding time delay issues to the process.

  • that depends. if you come up with a $1000 repair/replacement/etc. would it be easy to pay for? If you tack it onto the selling price, how much more a month will it cost? do you want peace of mind?
One bit of "faulty" calculation is somebody saying to put that money in a special account to take care of needed repairs. If you had that "extra' money why not just pay down the purchase a bit? If you put that $20 a month in your special account, at the end of your 2 years you will have amassed a grand total of just under $500. Not enough to take care of anything major.

  • I have never bought an extended warranty on anything that I have bought. I've never been sorry.

Here's a great resource for more answers. The owner of this website researched extended warranties for RV and then chose one. He liked the company so well, he offers the warranties through his website. Go to www.rv-dreams.com
