First time rving

My wife and i are planning on buying a coachman catalina legacy edition 323bhdsck. I know its big but we have a big family. I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on this. i plan on towing it with my 2015 crewcab silerado 5.3 with a 3;42 rear end.my max trailer weight is 9400 lb and gcwr is 15,000lb. just seeing if this is possible or a good i deal. i know i need sway bars ,but is this safe or do i need a 2500 diesel??? also the travel trailer has a dry weight of 7,530 and gvwr of 9500 and its 35'10" long.Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and hope to be rving soon.
  • Agreement. You would be pushing the envelope until it rips.
  • "I know its big but we have a big family."

Doesn't matter what size family you have. If your TV can't safely pull it (from a gross weight standpoint and from payload standpoint) your big family will be endangered. And, that TT overall at 40 feet is a big TT for a newbie and limits the number of CGs you can use particularly government CGs. This is at least the second time you've asked about this. Are you waiting for an answer you want to hear? Not from me...get less TT or a bigger TV.
  • Too much trailer for that truck, especially regarding payload capacity when the truck is loaded with your big family and cargo.
  • My 2016 Chevy 1500 5.3 pulls 12-14k worth of flatbed quite well actually on flat ground at sea level. Add in high profile of a TT and it will pull about the same as your 9000lb TT.
I wouldn't want to do it at altitude or steep grades, but the truck will handle it. You won't be the first one to the top of the hill.
The best for sure choice would be a HD pickup for better stability, especially given your lack of towing experience, but properly set up I personally wouldn't have an issue with that trailer in the flat lands.
You don't "need" a diesel but they're nice! You can tell the wife you need one....
  • All I can say is "good luck with that"..

Does not matter what the specs are for that 1/2 ton truck you have... Ain't gonna be a comfortable tow and you'll be overloaded no matter what the 'specs' say..

Sure, you'll get down the road.. But it ain't gonna be 'fun'..

(how many different posts of this same question have you done? :) )

  • I've towed for almost 40 years and "I" wouldn't do this for several reasons. What is the payload rating for your truck?
