Foreign RVers in the US & Canada

Hi. My (adult) daughter and I came over from the UK last month and stayed with family in Georgia while we got set up with a truck and travel trailer. We were told - apparently incorrectly - by a driving test office in GA that I could take my driving test there and get a US license, so I could tag the truck and trailer.

I now find that I can't do that as I'm not a GA resident and don't have a social security number.

It's very confusing because if you ask 3 people you get 3 different answers and we can't find a solid solution.

One thing some people do is put their rig in the name of family members. My sister didn't want to do that in case we got in an accident and her already high insurance went up. Fair enough.

So we're in desperate need of advice from any other non-US RVers about how they got around the tagging problem. We have 3 weeks before we're in big trouble.
  • My brother-in-law uses his International license when visiting from Holland when utilizing our truck & camper
  • Question's:
Are you planning on living in states now?
What are you planning to do with truck and camper after your visit?
    Why are you purchasing them?

Ray's comment about International license was a good suggestion.
  • Could an International Driver's License help in a case involving an RV?
  • Hi and welcome to the forums!

I am currently at work and at my place of employment we have a large number of people from India who work here. Most of them drive and own their own automobiles. I just asked one of my friends how they did it.

She said when she came to the US, the first thing she did was apply for a social security number. Because she had her Visa she could. AFTER he received her SSN number, everything opened up. Without the SSN, she couldn't do anything.

She owns her own home, ownes her own car, has her car registered, titled, and insured in Indiana and has credit. You cannot even get a credit card without having the SSN first.

So, I advise applying for an SSN immediately, then everything will open up for you.

In Indiana, you do not receive your drivers license or your registration at the BMV. They are mailed to you. Sometimes it can take up to 2 weeks to get them in the mail. Depending upon your state, you need to act accordingly.
  • I,d go straight to the DMV and ask, nobody on a computer can give you the info you need ,hope things work out and injoy your tour .
  • I believe all states require you to be resident of that state before issuing a drivers license. SOmething you should not and cannot do.

I Think your best bet is to pay for a separate policy in your sisters name with high limits of coverage and low deductable
