Today's diesels pour out twice as much torque at much lower RPM's as their gas powered brethren.
Your wife might like the newest ones. The exhaust has no odor to speak of and doesn't even get the inside of the tail pipe dirty it's so clean.
But hey, I get what your saying. If I had to replace mine today I would probably get one of the big gassers because we put very few miles on it and I have to make a lot of very short trips with it.
