getting paid to drive a motorhome

Hi everyone,
New to the forum, just wanted to pose a question and see if anyone had some input.

I'm considering a side job transporting motor-homes. The company is called Horizon Transport. They move brand new RVs from factories in IN and OR to customers all over the US and Canada. They pay .90 cents to $1.20 per mile depending on the RV. The driver is responsible for all fuel costs.

I'm trying to figure out if it would even be worth it considering the low mpg and high fuel costs.
What kind of mileage can I expect with a class A diesel? or class C? I would need to make $600 per 1000 miles. Is that even realistic?

Reverse engineer it a bit first. If you're now driving commercially you'll be restricted in terms of hours the same as any other commercial driver, it doesn't matter what you're driving.

If you use $0.50 / mile in fuel costs and 500 miles a day of driving. You will then have a maximum of $0.40 to $0.70 a mile to work with. That's $200 to $350 a day. But that's only one way, so if it's a 4 day drive out, it's a minimum 2 day bus ride back home for which you're not paid.

So using the 4 days out, 2 back, at $200 / day, that's $133.33 a day before you even pay any expenses. You'll want to eat, shower, etc. it also assumes you have zero downtime getting to / from bus terminal, waiting for a bus, etc., etc.

Doesn't sound like a person could net out at much above minimum wage.
  • You said you need to make $600 per 1000 miles - is that gross or net - i.e. before or after taxes? Are you going to be considered an employee or self-employed - i.e. do you have to pay both halves of the social security?

When I plan our travels, I use 50 cents a mile which is $4.00 per gallon at 8 miles to the gallon. You would likely get more miles to the gallon because the motorhome would be basically empty.

Are you allowed to sleep in the motorhome? Who pays for hotels if not? Do you have to pay for your trip back? Can you tow a car behind for the return trip?
  • I would be curious as to how you get back to the factory! Seems like a MH transport is a one way trip - then what happens? Get a bus ticket back?
  • Just curious...who pays for other expenses such as hotel rooms when you travel long distances?
