How do I know if my RV has a 3 stage charger?

I just bought a used RV and I'm going through the checklists. I see many recommend a 3 stage charger. How can I tell if mine is one? What do I look for?

My trailer specs are in my signature, in case you don't have that enabled.
  • The current battery needs to be replaced -- totally dead. Isn't a classic charger hard on batteries? Dries them out.
  • If it is working and you are not replacing batteries, then I would not worry about it. My converter.charger lasted 15 years. Unless you plan on doing a lot of boonedocking and need a bank of expensive deep cell batteries, then a upgrade may be worth it. If you will mostly be on shore power in RV parks and only occasionally using your battery for a few hours in Wally World parking lot, I would leave well enough alone.

When my old converter died I did get a "smart" 3 stage unit, but I still do not think I have needed one. It is nice to see the light come on and tell me it is getting rid of the sulfur build up, or on float, or charging battery.
  • Ok thanks all, I expect to be able to find that tonight and will try to post tomorrow or Monday with what I find in Google.

Simple method.. Locate charger, and either GOOGLE or POST make and model

IE: Google; Make, model, speciications or
    Google: make, Model, Owners manual
  • Post or look up the charger model number.

And discharge the batteries some and check the voltage at the battery terminals. About 14.8V for bulk and 13.6V for float.

What he ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ said. There is no other way to tell. Post the make and model here and we will let you know what you have.
  • Since you purchased it used, how do you know if it's even original ?

All have a charging system, but it may not be 3-4 stage.

Converters may or may not have a built-in 3/4 stage charger. Some have a stand-alone charging system.

Open the access panel to the converter & look for the make & model number of what's in it now.
  • No, it won't have one unless the previous owner replaced it. Very few factory units have a 3 stage charger unless upgraded specially.
