How to go with the flow but restricted by reservations?

I realize summertime is a busy time, especially in Colorado. BUT, we are newly retired and just bought a TT and was (naively) thinking we could just drive, stop when we feel like it, stay couple days and move on to the next place but how do you have any type of 'freedom' in an RV if all the RV spots are booked up months in advance? Since we are new, I hate the thought of boondocking everywhere until we know what we're doing. We've gone on a couple of 2 nighters close to home but had hookups (and would PREFER to have hookups mostly).

How in the world can you be free when so much pre planning is needed to secure a spot? (Other than going to Colorado in the dead of winter). We plan on leaving Texas middle of ajuly and head toward Yellowstone and Washington State with no particular return date set.

Advice?

We have traveled across the U.S.and Canada mostly without reservations and we always managed to find a place to stay.

You'll find that you're more likely to find a place to stay without reservations Sunday through Thursday. When we spend extended time on the road during the summer, we try to book reservations just for the weekend as we travel if we are going to be in a popular area. You'll also find out is much easier to get a spot in a private RV park than in public campgrounds during high season.

    Good luck and safe travels!
  • On the other hand, if no CGs had reservations, then we would all be in the same dilemma. You might check a day ahead for cancellations at places you're interested in, or aim for the no-reservation national forest CGs. Seems a lot of folks on this forum have good luck much of the time just showing up & hoping for a space. That said, in major tourist areas during prime tourist season, you may find campsites to require more searching - or reservations. :)
