- Dealers love a trade in. They make money on both sides of the deal.
Convenience comes at a price. But don't worry it all rolls up into the new loan ;) - K_CharlesExplorerThe tax deal above is true in CT. Even when we traded out of state we only paid tax on the difference.
- SidecarFlipExplorer IIICL is terrible for selling big ticket items. RV trader and Flea-Bay is better. Less tire kickers and low ballers.
People use CL for a fishing expedition. - lawrosaExplorerAlthough I sold my TT private and got 2 thousand more it really would of been better to trade it in.
For tax reasons.
In most states, when you trade-in your Trailer when purchasing another , you are only required to pay sales tax on the difference between the trade-in value and the price of the new Trailer
I got hit with the total amount of taxes when I brought the trailer from PA to Jersey..
If I had to do it over I would of traded it in.. - zekethomas253ExplorerOk, real world numbers. I took my B+ to a dealer to trade for a Class A gas. The number they gave me was shockingly low. I put it on RV trader and the difference for the sale? $15,000 better.
No question, do not trade. Sell first, take cash to make your deal. - mgirardoExplorerIf you can sell yours first, do that instead of trading in. Trade-in value will most certainly be lower than what you would make selling it yourself. The caveat is the demand where you live. If you live in a rural area with small population and not a lot of campgrounds, you may find trying to sell is hard. If the RV is in good shape and has been well taken care of, it might sell better on eBay since there is a bigger market.
If you don't want the hassle and frustration that can come with selling it yourself, then getting less for it by trading it in might be worth it.

Depends on what your selling , we have our fifth wheel for sale and it is a very slow process not much interest in used bigger fifth wheels right now but if you have something that is in demand sell it yourself otherwise trade it in and be done with it . I would have traded it in but we bought a TC and the dealer we purchased from doesn't deal in large trailers at all.

Perhaps your asking price is too much? Lots of sellers get frustrated at lack of interest but eventually come to the conclusion its true worth is not what they thought it was.
Is this yours?
Try asking $19K which is around what any dealer would put it on the lot for as the trade in value is around $13K or a little less. - DevocamperExplorerDepends on what your selling , we have our fifth wheel for sale and it is a very slow process not much interest in used bigger fifth wheels right now but if you have something that is in demand sell it yourself otherwise trade it in and be done with it . When purchasing a new trailer is it better to have some cash to put down or have a trade in?Ralph Cramden wrote:
Cash..........without a doubt.
If you have a current one you're considering trading sell it yourself. You'll do much better.
"Better" being a relative term as selling it yourself by definition also means having to prep it for sale yourself then having to put up with the endless inquiries, endless stupid questions, endless aggravation with potential buyers saying they're interested but later not showing up ... endless. :M And the reason many opt to trade instead, reasoning that their time and mental health is worth more than the aggravation private selling brings with it. ;)
I guess so..... but I had no endless inquiries, endless stupid questions, endless aggravation with potential buyers saying they're interested but later not showing up ... endless, selling our 2013. Put it on Ebay and sold it within 3 days, even hauled it halfway to AR from PA and met the buyer at a Cracker Barrel. Nice guy, still calls me with questions or to tell me how much he likes it. - AtleeExplorer IIFrom my very recent experience, sell your current trailer, if you have one, and then go make a deal on a new trailer.
