keeping cabinet doors closed when traveling

How do you do it? Most of mine flip open, even the sliding windows slide open. Do you only put things in there when parked?
  • As stated above, check the latches. They should no open during travel. Also make sure that what's in the cabinet isn't bouncing around and pushing the doors open.

Windows too should not slide open. Close them tightly until they "snap" in place.
  • Tension bars inside the cabinets will keep heavy can good items from pushing on the door. I use a bungee on the refrigerator door after a quart jar of Chili preserves fell out and broke. That was on I-10 in LA, which is like a paint shaker for RV's.
  • Check your roller latches on the inside of the doors. If they are out of adjustment and don't line-up correctly, they don't hold the doors shut. They are adjustable. I have replaced some of them with better quality that can be found at any home store.
Small bungee cords can also be used on cabinet doors with opposing knobs/handles.
  • As mentioned above most of us do not have cabinet doors come open.

I would check the hinges and make sure they are tight and the doors aligned correctly. They shouldn't open.

That said I will tell you that if you put too much stuff in the 'door' of the 'fridge' THAT will open. Don't ask me how I know! :W
  • Install gas shocks. Will keep doors closed and will also once opened will hold them open.
    Lock the sliding windows.
  • Um, driving too fast on the washboard?

Seriously, though, I've never had the problem. The only "self-opening" thing I've ever had was the vent in the bathroom that wanted to open during a patch I was driving into a 35-50 mph headwind. When I put the wind cover over the vent, it stopped doing even that.
  • Ours have yet to fly open. Of course we don't have a big can of beans rolling towards the door either.
  • What kind of road and how fast are you driving? Sounds like you drive in potholes at 80MPH.

I've never had any cabinet doors come open in 160,000 miles. Have had the knife block make it to the floor from the counter top after a panic stop, but that's all.
  • I put child safety locks on mine and even that doesn't always work.
