Kings Canyon NP to S. Lake Tahoe

Hello and thanks to all in advance!

I'm heading up to Kings canyon/S Lake Tahoe from San Diego in Aug and was wondering if this drive is challenging? Can someone suggest the best routes if any? I drive a F 150 and pull a 27ft trailer. I got stuck last summer driving up the Teton Pass and would love to avoid any unnecessary adventures :) I am staying at Dorst Creek Campground and Campground By the Lake. thanks!

  • Take 99N to 198 E.

Then take 63 North. (this is a 2 lane country road) It will hit 180. Take that east into the park.

OR from 198E exit plaza drive/RD 80. Head north till american. Go east on american.
THen north on cove rd to 180. This will bypass downtown visalia. Look on google maps.

When you leave take 180 west all the way to 99 then head north.

Never been to tahoe so coudln't help you there.
  • Also, you need to get to the Dorst campground from the north. You can not use the Sequoia entrance on 198 heading north out of Three Rivers because of length restrictions. Climb to the top of Moro Rock. It is worth it.
  • My bad, what I meant about the Teton pass was that I would like the path of least resistance. Last year leaving Jackson Hole I ended up going over the Teton Pass and I bet I could have taken a better route as I headed south. Thanks for the feedback.
  • We went over Ebbet's last Summer in the other direction. It is a beautiful crossing, but I would not recommend it with an F-150.

Highway 50 is a good choice.

MarkTwain has given good advice. The foothills of the Sierra are windy and narrow with a lot of up and down. Hiway 50 is a good choice to get over the mountains. I do not recommend Ebbet's Pass.

Hwy. 99 to Hwy 198 to Kings Canyon. Given your concerns about your tow vehicle, I would go back west on Hwy 198 back to Hwy 99. Then head north to Hwy 50 out of Sacramento. Then east to South Lake Tahoe. Hwy 50 has some climbs and is a 2 lane road. With my 35' 5th wheel, I just slow down and take my time. Keep your speed down when you descend from the top of the mountain into Tahoe. I keep my speed around 40 miles per hr. 50 is a good mountain road and scenic. Visalia to South Lake Tahoe is approx. 5 hrs /310 miles. Depending on the size of your fuel tank, I would fill up before Hwy 50, just to be safe.
  • Stuck on Teton Pass? In Idaho and Wyoming? Why?

You could drive up US 99 from Yosemite and go over the Sierras on I80. Tahoe is on one side of the Sierras and Yosemite is on the other...western
