Well any gauge installed would need easy access to be seen.

My regulator tends to switch over at 2am when I like to sleep. I don't have any issues with using the manual method if that works for you. Does not work well for me. BTDT
If I was that concerned I would bring along a 3rd or 4th bottle to swap in.

I guess one might argue that most tanks these days are enclosed with a hard plastic tank cover, making it impossible to see the gauge on the regulator. One could solve this by cutting a hole in the tank cover and gluing a piece of clear plastic over that hole so the guage would be visible. I haven't bothered myself, I guess because I don't really care when one tank runs dry as I always have another full one right beside it. ;)

If you have a working automatic changeover regulator... that is the gauge and will indicate when the primary tank is ready for refill. There is no reason that you would run out. Except maybe if you do not check the regulator... in which case no gauge would help.

If you need a new regulator I recommend Cavagna brand (amazon)

I tried one. it extended the hose farther out and it rubbed on the tank cover. Finally rubbed a hole in hose. Lost all my propane and was a dangerous situation.
Now I do as SoundGuy does.

"Tanks" suggest you have two and therefore likely an auto changeover regulator, in which case I'd suggest you do as I do - run the tanks sequentially, when the first empties switch over manually to the second ... when you use this method it's hard to forget that empty tank needs to be filled. ;)

While weighing the tanks is obviously best, I don't think it is really practical.

It sounds like none of the gauges really work (pretty much what I expected). Sounds like the water/condensation method is the easiest.

To the OP ... if you have dual tanks just don't worry about it, when one tank empties you can revert to the second. If you have just one tank consider adding a second with an auto changeover regulator. Alternately, if you consider propane reserve a concern you could swap out your steel tank(s) for composite tank(s) that will reveal their content just by looking at them. :)

I still do it the old fashion way.
Pour hot water on it and touch the tank at the bottom and slide your finger upwards. Soon as you hit warm metal you know how much is left.
Mark it and do it again for a few days. This way you will learn how much you use during a day, 1", 1/2" etc.
