Metered Electric Cost

We are getting our budget together to venture out on the road. Now, I understand that metered electric depends on individual use, but we were wondering what the average cost of metered electric is during peak times. It looks like most RV campgrounds meter you from a two to a month stay!

My secondary question, is it more cost effective to stay until they meter you or go with the longer stay and be metered for your electric use?

I appreciate any advice on this topic!
  • Currently paying 9 cents per kilowatt. Running everything on a 40 foot bus including two heatpumps, fridge/freezer, TVs, computers... you name it, we're running it... works out to about $60 per month in Western Washington State. It was 28 degrees last night and a high of 54 is expected. As you know, when it gets much below the upper 30s, the propane furnace kicks in so the cold being experienced in the rest of the country shouldn't change those numbers much.

As for your question about moving to avoid metered electric, it certainly wouldn't take much moving to cost more than $60 per month. Also, monthly rent rates (usually where the metered electric happens) is considerably less than daily rates.

By the way... I see you're in TX where the air conditioning may be the real juice eater. I can tell you that, last year in Southern California when the temps were hitting 100, the AC ran 24/7 and I don't recall the bill ever being over $80 or $90.

Hope this helps and welcome to the Forum and the RV lifestyle! You're going to have a blast!
  • It all depends on the cost per kilowatt hour and your use of appliances like the AC or convection microwave.
With no AC use we used about 300 to 350 KWh per month.
It was always cheaper for to stay for a month and pay for metered electricity no matter where we were in the country.

We have seen KWh rates from 11 cents per KWh to as high as 20 cents per KWh.

In spite of what some think, there are states that allow RV parks to charge more for electricity than they pay. AZ is one that does. It is not a Federal matter, it is governed by state utility boards and regulations.
  • Metered electric useage starts at 1 mth and each mth there after.
It is always cheaper to pay by the mth with metered electric usage.
The charge I will guess would be between $50 to $150 depending on your AC use. My electric runs around $100 per mth during June,July and
Aug in SW Colorado. That's in an unshaded site.
    Hope this helps.
  • Too many variables.
Some campgrounds charge the same rate as the power-co, some treat it as a profit center.
Too much depends on what they charge, your costs for moving, your wants and needs...etc, etc, etc.
