microwave replacement

Ijust took mine to a repair shop nd it was fixed for 100 bucks (cdn pricing) was a deal as a new rv one is 450 and I didnt have to go through the hassel of finding one the mounting fins would fit on.

Lowe's/ HD both have wide selection, replaced GE with another GE.

Looks great! My uncle is also having a hard time looking for a replacement microwave. We'll just finish installing the suspension and jeep wheels on his Wrangler this week and we'll start interior modding of his RV.

I would love to hear how you did the modification because I very much want to get a convection microwave now that my regular microwave is fried. Do you have pics of what you did and can you tell us how it's going or if you should have done something differently?

Well there is a bit a story behind this replacement. We had a good working microwave. We went for a drive one day and stopped by the CW in Eugene, OR. We were not looking for a replacement for our microwave, BUT I saw a display with a nice Dometic convection / microwave for a great price (about 33% off). We didn't have any measurements, I looked it over and was pretty sure it would fit. We bought it anyway.
Well required some modifications to the cabinet, all made with a drywall plunge saw. The space above the oven is recovered space that was just a blank panel when we first got the 5er. DW needed storage space for floor, sugar, and pasta.

That's a good point - Theoretically, you could probably run your inverter microwave on less than 500 watts of AC power, if you dialed it all the way down to "1".

I "went small" with my conventional microwave for the same reason: It doesn't require a lot of AC power.

Even so, the cooking time doesn't seem to be appreciably longer than with a "full-size" microwave - although the maximum food capacity is considerably less.

^The picture is not mine - It's from a fellow Casita trailer owner who loves to do custom woodwork.

Most Casitas give you the option of either ordering the trailer with a built-in microwave, or having an empty compartment with a flip-up front door (like the one shown in the picture) where you can either put your own store-bought microwave, or just use it for misc. storage.

The sides and bottom of the compartment are lined with carpet at the factory.

In my own Casita, I went with a $50 store-bought microwave from Walmart. It looks very similar to the one in the photo, but lacks a wood platform underneath it. Closing the front door on the compartment secures it while the trailer is being towed.

In a typical RV, you might need to add the carpet to the sides and back of the compartment after removing the original built-in microwave. Mechanically fixing the new microwave in place is optional, if you install a front door on the compartment.

Convection ovens give off quite a bit of heat, so some care is necessary to make sure that your compartment has adequate clearances and ventilation.

This is a very nice mod. It probably looks nicer than the original and has more storage inside. Sometime we get hung up on an exact replacement and miss out on a better solution.
