more questions! FR mini lite 2509s, 233s, or others?

Sorry I keep revisiting similar topics on different parts of this forum!

I have an expedition w the hd tow pkg. There will be 6 of us riding in it. Four kids 11 and under who will grow, I know. planning on weekends in ga mountain state campgrounds, with a week at the beach and occasional fort wilderness/disney trip. DH used to popup camp across the country but idk when we'll have time for that kind of thing. so mostly the weekends three seasons with a couple week-long trips per year.

I had narrowed down to the 233s Rockwood/shamrock hybrid. Then found the 2509s mini lite. Is it too heavy? Haven't actually weighed the vehicle w kids in it. Honestly there's a stone store nearby but not quite sure what to ask them to weigh! If you can tell me I'll go weigh!

Then I read posts that say "I'd never buy Forest River" for many quality reasons. I can't afford a Lance. What other short, lightweight options with quality will sleep 6 in beds (don't want to set up dinette every night if I can help it)? and yes I agree I will have to compromise!

Camper needs to be on the shorter side because it will park in our driveway. Plus weight is an issue obviously. I don't care if new or used. But not too old preferably as I'm understanding these lightweight campers don't really have longevity.

Are there campers I should look at? Is the 233s the best fit? I've read about bubbling roofs on the mini lites. Also I would consider Jayco and I'm drawn to the 23b but I think I really like it because it's kind of a classic in my mind having been around for so long. But yeah I'd have to put kids on the dinette every night. Or we could do something with less beds but more room and put a couple of cots on the floor.

DH wants a camper that's easy to pull and park. He's used to tents and a popup so luxury not a factor. I'm kind of wimpy and will be sitting in camper/at camp while he and kids hike/fish/explore so if I have somewhere to set up a sewing machine or read, I'm good. But I don't want to stay home; I want to go too!

Advice? Want to buy in the next month if we can so we can get camping!

  • have decided to stick with a lighter hybrid and pack very light. thx. Talked to tire shop and they don't recommend LT tires for handling. Said to just inflate my Ps to max. Not sure I agree. Will look at adding a leaf as well.
  • That is something we looked for.... it is hard to find a passenger van with the HD towing package in a 250 or 350 without it having been converted to cargo or wheelchair. Lots of e150s with the v8 engine but their payload is similar to the expedition.

We will keep our eye out for a v10 or diesel (impossible to find!) in a 250 or 350. I look online every now and then. I think all 250s are cargo only though. Really I've only seen one v10 passenger van and no diesel when I looked for several months last summer. Wish Ford didn't stop making the E-series!

If we are AT payload, what is affected - handling of the TV? I am planning to upgrade the tires and talk to my mechanic about adding a leaf spring too.

Maybe it won't be too much of a pain to set up the dinette and sofa every night if we are stuck doing that.

Well thanks but I that’s why I’m asking for suggestions! I realize that but we are kind of stuck w the expedition since I can’t find anything else to carry is and tow and drive daily.

One possible vehicle that could work out here is a full-sized van. They typically have greater payload capacities than SUVs (and often crew cab pickups) and can be configured to tow a decently large trailer.
  • Well thanks but I that’s why I’m asking for suggestions! I realize that but we are kind of stuck w the expedition since I can’t find anything else to carry is and tow and drive daily.

So if we put ALL cargo in the rv and figure on a 100# wdh, that leaves us 806# for tongue weight. Figuring on kids growing in the next few years (100#) we’ll have the tv and trailer, I can tow any trailer that has a tongue weight of 706# or less?
  • That 1466 number is for occupants(including driver)and cargo.

Subtracting 560 from the 1466, leaves you 906lbs for cargo in truck, weight of WDH and loaded tongue weight.

Now you can see why you'll run out of payload capacity way before approaching max tow capacity.
  • First number is 1466 pounds. Payload I guess. I don't know if that includes the driver or not. DH weighs 150, me 160, kids are currently about 90, 70, 50, and 40 (rounding up).

    GVWR is 7625 lbs.

Manual says gcwr is 15000, and trailer weight maximum 9000.
  • Start with this. There should be a yellow sticker on the door of your expedition, it will say something to the effect of - "Load of passengers and cargo should never exceed ______ lbs."

There will be another one that will have "GVWR" on it. What do the stickers say?
  • OK let me rephrase my questions!

Are we stuck with a popup due to payload? Do any of the 3-bed hybrids have a smaller tongue weight/hitch weight/whatever it's called?

What is the lightest decent WDH?

I'll try to get to the scales today and weigh the expo with me and 4 kids in it. I can then add dh weight and one teen's weight. I bet I'll be right at my payload once I add baggage and a hitch. :(

I'm seeing that I'm up at the limit with payload. WHAT do people with large families do? Seriously. We cannot do a pickup, too many kids. Before I bought the Expy I looked for v10 ford vans but there was only one I could find in my half of the US and it sold before I got to it. Idk payload on that anyway. We briefly owned an Excursion but it was so old that everything interior and electrical was breaking. UGH.

I could sell the Expy and look for a better Excursion I suppose. DH might not agree since the Excursion is such a poor daily driver. IDK. They go at a premium around here.
