The challenge now is the cost - my sister, who has owned a class C and A but is not at all frugal, thinks we should buy (finance!) a used C. She says smaller is better esp for parking and suggested a 27'. I'm hopeful I can find a local here who will rent to us. I'm also thinking of a trial run to Baltimore & DC over Spring Break.
The issue with financing is that the older the RV, the harder to get financing. The cheaper you want to spend on an RV, the older it will be. Remember, the size of the RV for a trip like this is going to make a difference on you getting around and parking during site seeing. At 27' you should be fine for parks and campgrounds. But a lot of places may not have RV parking. You will have to make do. I suggest renting one first for a short trip of the size you want and go and drive through town first with it and decide. Or you can go rent a 26' Uhaul for the day and drive it around. Then remember it is smaller than the one you are considering. As I mentioned, you won't have a towing car (unless you spend the money to outrig a car to do so), so you will have to break camp every time you want to go somewhere unless there is public transportation available. Personally, with just 3 or 4 of you, I would consider a 22-23'. Smaller. Easier to drive. Get one with a rear corner bed and the bed over the cab. You can sleep in the bed in the back and let the boys either share the bed over the cab or have one there and turn the dinette into a bed and have the other one there. Your trip will be a lot of "on-the-go"...no need to have a lot of living area. You won't spend a lot of time sitting in one spot with it.
