Newbies-Need to Buy TV for RV

Hello. My husband and I are picking up our new travel trailer on Saturday. It did not come w/a t.v. Do we have to buy a special type of t.v. for the RV or can we go to Walmart and buy one? Also, do many of you buy different mattresses than the ones that came w/your RV? If so, do you have to buy them special too (I noticed some same "Queen short"). Thank you. I know we will be asking lots of questions in the next few days/weeks/months. :)

  • Many new TT's have stickers on the wall that tell you where to mount a TV - does yours? Just measure the space you plan on putting it, and buy a LCD TV that fits. If mounting on a wall, you'll need a bracket - get one that can be moved in multiple directions. Use a stud finder to find a stud, drill pi;ot holes and use an appropriate size lag bolt to mount the TV bracket.

Do we have to by a special type of TV?

Two answers: The most significant is NO, you do not. Any home type TV will work, My Class A back in the old CRT days came with a pair of Toshiba's which you could get straight off the shelf at Best Buy. Nothing special at all about 'em save the way they are bolted in. (more on that later).

I replaced one with an off the shelf from Best Buy Samsung.. It died of old age

I replaced it with a off-brand from Wall*mart and since I need both a computer monitor (it is) and a TV (which it is when it is not a monitor) at the same time in that room, I added a new Samsung from Wal*Mart "one of a kind missing stuff) shelf (No remote, but my old samsung remote...you guessed it.. it works).

Answer 2: Some folks like to put 12 volt TV's in RV's for when you are "off the grid" If you like to be "off the grid" you might consider (Oh, the new Samsung, 12 volt, uses a power brick converter normally).

    Note on mounting:

The old CRT jobs had custom brackets bolted to them and you had to be careful where you drilled holes for the screws.

The new flat, wide screen, jobs have standardized mounting threaded holes in the back so all you need is the proper bracket,, Or on the one I have I remove it to the partifully filled laundry basket when I hit the road.
  • Buy the television you want, where you want. Only consideration is will it fit where you want to put it for viewing. When traveling ours lays on the bed.

As far as the mattress, you will get many responds on here. We bought a short queen on sale from CW world a few years ago. At that time a good deal, the same one not so good a deal now.
  • I would measure the mattress or see if it's measurements are on the manufacturer's web site (floor plan or features). My 5er came with a full queen, 60" x 80".
  • One more consideration is whether or not you plan to camp with electric hookups. If yes, my work here is done. If no, you may want to investigate AC/DC tv's...
  • Decide what size space that you want to put the TV in, and buy where you get the most for the best price. As far as mounting, a LED TV can be stowed when traveling, so mounting or not can be your decision depending on your needs.
  • TV can be purchased anywhere. Our mattress is a name brand mattress, however my wife still purchased memory foam and cut to fit.
  • Go to Walmart. When our matress word out, we replaced it with 6" of memory foam. A 4" foam mattress from Walmart, an a 2" MF topper we already had. If its too long, just cut to fit.
