Nightlights under some rigs

I am currently parked for the winter at a Tucson area RV Park and see quite a few people keep lights on under their rigs all night long. I know it is supposed to keep the critters from moving in during the night. On the other hand there are a lot of rigs without the night lights. So my question is do the lights really work? One guy has two very bright halogen work lights that light up half the park, one under the trailer the other under his truck IMO that's a bit excessive.
I do not have lights under the rig and have not had any issues with critters.

  • Maybe I just cant understand the annoy part. If they really went to the trouble to put the lights out there and wire everything, how would it annoy someone? Besides wanting to learn about wiring and hoses being eaten issue before it happens to me I'd like to know how it annoys someone. Does it glare or create static for tv signals or what? If I feel that I would like to be proactive and TRY to keep the rats away I'd like to take any steps I can to not also anoy people while I do it. Help me understand this.

I have seen kids put lights under cars that they have tricked out so it looks "cool" and I can understand that. It's just a "young" thing but I cant see us older people going to the trouble or expense to look "cool" or show off.

Heck, I really dont want to get out of the lazy boy let alone spend money and have to crawl around out there.

    Thanks

    Pack rats

Note the "evidence" is anecdotal in nature only. There is no scientific basis in fact..

It works for some, your mileage may vary.

Yes it may work for some. It appears some also have luck with peppermint oil. I haven't been to desert areas a lot but have heard of this problem so I would like to be armed before I go. Do you have any tricks that work? Maybe it's not one size fits all but there does seem to be a problem with eaten wiring and hoses so the lights are probably for this reason. I cant imagine they put them under there to show off or annoy people. Maybe?
  • Lighted areas help keep squirrels, pack rats, skunks, nighttime critters etc. from setting up house.

Last year when we moved to AZ I had to light up the area under front porch.......13 skunks later I was finally able to seal up entry and do away with lights.

The guy using the bright halogen lights is the only one that has enough lighting to be affective as to nighttime critters.

    The others..........just ambiance lighting
