It's called "situational awareness" and applies in many situations. I also live in an area where stop lights & signs appear to be optional and I NEVER proceed without looking. That split-second of hesitation can be a life saver, assuming, though, that the nutbag behind you that's laying on his horn because you didn't jump the light can control himself!
