Waiting that 3 count has saved me a few times also. Even if I am rolling and have the green light I always look both ways to see if some genius is going to blow the light before I go through the intersection. Had a situation similar situation to the OP and saw the guy going to fast to stop and I layed on my horn and everyone stopped just in time to avoid being hit.
