pilot/flying j overnight parking question

I'm planning my first multi-day road trip (SoCal - OR - Tahoe - back home in SoCal), and I would like to take advantage of the overnight parking available at the Pilot/Flying J facilities along the way for a few one-night stays. I'm pulling a TT with one slide. In your experience, may I extend the slide while at a Pilot/Flying J? I called them, and the rep I got hold of explained that he didn't think so because the spaces were only 14' wide. I explained that my TT was 8' wide, and my slide was only another 4'...in essence a total of 12' in width. The rep then said something along the line of, "Well then, it should be OK to extend your slide out." Since the rep sort of went back and forth on his answer, I thought this forum might be a better place to get a definitive "yes" or "no" answer. Thanks for any insight you can provide.
  • I think extending the slides is BAD idea. They will be very hard to see at night and stand a good chance of being hit by a truck pulling in beside you.
Besides why would you want to spend the night in a noisy, smelly truck stop. Truckers don't always have a choice but you do.
Don't be cheap, find a campground.
  • We've stayed at few and always done fine. If we want to put a slide out we usually go find a corner or curb where the slide will extend out over it so it's not actually taking up any additional space. Some truck stops never get full and others are very crowded, so be aware before putting a slide out.

As noted above, the truck stops can be noisy. There's refers running, engines for either heat or air conditioning, drivers coming and going at all times of night, sometimes tire changing going on by tire trucks and drivers switching trailers. And usually the truck stops are in industrial yards. We parked at one and had just gotten in bed when the trains went by about 10' behind us.

In addition to the noise, the biggest problem with your proposed approach is availability. Most have only a few RV spaces and they fill up early. As stated local RV spaces are the best thing, and there is always Walmart.

Tell me more about Walmart, please.

  • Just be aware that there will be MANY 18-wheelers with their engines going all night!! Pay the few bucks and find a quiet RV park to get a good nights sleep!! And YES, this is from my personal experiences.
