Researching stages

My husband and I will have more opportunity for longer travel in 3 1/2 years. I am researching Motorhomes so we can begin taking some weekend/holiday trips then eventually take some longer 2-3 week trips to the far corners and Canada. We do not plan to become full timers. We will use the motorhome for some SEC tailgating weekends.
I originally was researching the Class C and A. I believe I have eliminated the Class C but we may still look at them. We plan to start looking at the dealers nearby and attend a Show in the next few months but I would like to have a better understanding of the manufacturers.

I am open to a used recent model or possibly new. We will look at the 30-34 range as most of the time it will be 2 adults and our Pug. We will have weekends with extras and visits from our kids.
I have done extensive research online.
I would like to look at Newmar, Monaco/Holiday Rambler, Fleetwood, Winnebago/Itasca.
It appears that Thor Tiffin and Forest River are available in abundance.

We will absolutely drive several. I would like the option of bunks which will eliminate a few models.
Thanks for any advice or opinions.
  • While you may impress the bystanders,
you are going to miss out while touring
    if you have a classA.

With a small, 24 ft or under, classC,
You can go anywhere that a large pickup can travel.

I am not a fan of towing, you are limited in where you can go.and where you can turn around.

We have travelled all of N America in a 22ft C,
Have never felt the need to tow a car.
  • You know, buying an RV is a real personal thing. We started with a Class A and I just didn't love it, so we found a C and I feel more comfortable driving it. I would suggest that you rent one first and see how you like it. You can find a lot of nearly new RVs for sale that folks thought they wanted and turned out they didn't
And that is my second suggestion - don't buy new. You can find some great bargains out there.
Are you going to need a tow vehicle? You can see a lot with an RV alone but there is a lot to say for finding a place to park and then having a car for exploring, shopping, sightseeing, etc. If that is the case, you might want to consider a 5th Wheel.
How much do you want to spend is also a consideration. Like I said earlier, if you can purchase a high end used for a cheaper new, go for the high end every time.
