Roadside Assistance - Progressive vs Coach Net/Good Sam

We're complete newbies, and purchasing a 29' Class C from a family member in the next few weeks. When I got our insurance quote from Progressive (we're USAA members and they work with Progressive for RV/motorcycle insurance), the yearly insurance includes their roadside assistance program. However, while reading the boards here, it looks like many people have either Coach Net or Good Sam for roadside assistance.

So, does anyone have experience with Progressive's roadside service? Is it as reliable as they claim? Since it is included in the cost of the insurance I'd prefer to just stick with theirs if it is worthwhile.

If Progressive's isn't reliable, do you prefer Coach Net or Good Sam and why?

Thanks so much!
  • Maybe this is apples and oranges, but we have Progressive roadside for our motorcycles. I just had to have them contact a hauler to tow my Goldwing to a dealer 6 miles away because I found the rear tire with a big hole in it, while in my garage.

The good: Progressive kept calling back (automated) until the hauler showed up. The coverage is cheap and no cost to me to haul the bike (no out of pocket).

The bad: While on the phone with Progressive (making the claim), the rep stated that if it was over 15 miles to where it had to go, I was going to have to pay some. Wow, only 15 miles? Like there is a motorcycle shop on every corner? Oh, and its not spelled out in the coverage book they send you. Tricksy.
  • When searching for ERS I limited my research to Coach-net and Good Sam since both specifically target the RV community. Just made me feel more comfortable thinking they would better address getting my 5er and truck towed in if necessary.
Both got lots of compliments and few complaints on the RV web sites I visit. But Good Sam complaints did show up slightly more than Coach-net, so I went with Coach-net. Fortunately I have not had to use them yet so can't comment on how well they will perform.
  • Five years ago, after a detailed comparison, I found that Progressive had much better roadside service than State Farm (and State Farm’s agent agreed). I also compared it to Good Sam’s and the only difference was the additional vehicle coverage but the Progressive’s roadside premium is substantially less than Good Sam’s.

I’ve had no roadside claims with Progressive but they were very professional in handling the replacement of my two windshields a few years ago and their premiums have not risen significantly in the 5 years that I’ve been with them.

Insurance rates very substantially from state to state, city to city, owner to owner so it’s hard to say how yours will compare to anyone else.

Progressive contracts the roadside assistance with a third party. It's optional on most policies, you can take it or leave it.

We have Progressive and their roadside assistance is provided through Coach Net as I recall. Check with your agent. We used it once with no problems. Road side assistance can be hit and miss depending on where you are. None of the companies are perfect and your can have a bad experience with any of them.
  • Does Progressive actually provide roadside assistance or do they simply reimburse your expenses?

Coachnet, Good Sam, and others provide a phone number to call and they send the truck from a local towing company under contract to them.
  • I haven't tried Progressive. Coach Net left me hanging twice, so they're finished. I have Good Sam now and they've been great, but I haven't needed to call them yet. :)
  • Think of roadside assistance is an insurance policy. If you experience a breakdown service will be provided according to the terms of your policy. Some of us will have good experiences while others may not. Look at what each provider covers and their costs. One difference is that Progressive only covers the RV while Coach Net and Good Sam covers all your vehicles under one policy.
