We had already seen most of the country before retirement. At least all we were interested in seeing. We traveled in our jobs and moved every few years for 30 plus years. We retired and got the RV so the dogs could travel with us while we visited relatives, fished/shopped/lived for weeks in places where we got away from the heat in summer and cold in winter. Now the dogs are gone we mostly travel overseas and use AirBnb. We are also registered house sitters and travel in the US to places that interest us for 1-3 weeks house/dog/cat/critter sitting for people on vacation.
SO, to address your question. Being tied to one or two or X # of places does not suit us. We do own two properties but have just about abandoned them in favor of traveling and have just about stopped using the RV also.
If you want to travel in the US get a good van, install a good porta potty and drive. If you want to travel overseas use AirBnb, pack light, and live like a local-minimum eating out, do laundry yourself, use public transport, and buy local thrift/discount clothes/shoes etc.
