I am some one who is a bit paranoid about water and all the water going into our trailer goes through two or three filters depending on my confidence of the source. The first is a particulate filter as I do not want mud (what it would become) in the tank.
Having said that Chlorine sterilizes quite nicely and copper kills bacteria in water. If it were me I would buy a RV water heater wand and use it in the both the water heater and the water tank to get rid of potential sediment, chlorine it in high dosage and leave it in for a couple of days and rinse and repeat. Last cleaning use bicarbonate of sodium to get rid of taste and do a bit more cleaning.
