Well, I guess my wife and I are one of those "odd couples" since we are empty nesters too. At our age (I'm approaching 60), we've already done it all (so it seems anyway). We had the kids that ran and made noise and wore us out. We had the pets (and many of them ... including a pet chicken and 3 birds that went camping with us, a rabbit 2 dogs and 2 cats ... all the same time) because our daughter was a pet-a-holic! We've experienced the hustle and bustle of camping. We experienced the go..go..go..go..non stop.. exhausting.. total activity..run..run..run.. camping, and now we're just tired! It's nice to just go and relax and do nothing but sit around, watch a bit of television, read a book, surf the internet and pretty much just keep to ourselves. We do enjoy watching young families experience all the "things" we did when we were younger too. We sit back and laugh a lot at parents yelling at their kids, anticipating who's going to fall off a bicycle and skin a knee, and over last Labor Day, was kind of shocked when one kid punched-out another right in the camp site behind us and then the parents praised the kid for beating up the other. I mean, it's all entertaining. But we're not active any more.
We both still work 40-45 hour a week jobs. I'm constantly in the process of remodeling our home. I'm engaged in a large remodel project again. We have acreage that needs care and attention. I have an aging mother that is very demanding and exhausting, and I take care of her property too. So you know, when we get away from the hustle and bustle of our world, we just like to vegetate. Sorry my world is not opened up to hospitality. Been there, done that .. So We'll just sit back and watch you young folks exhaust yourselves chasing after the children. In a way, it reminds us of what we use to be able to do, but just getting too darn old to be that active any more.
Dutch, very nice story. I certainly enjoyed reading your view of camping. Thanks for sharing.
