Tailgate up or down?

We've got a Grand Design Reflection 28bh coming. It's got the standard Lippert pin box. Our truck has the factory Ford/Reese 27k hitch.

I'm a total newb at this. Do I back the truck up to hitch with the gate down, and then put it back up when I'm towing or must I run with the tailgate down? I imagine so long as the fiver clears the bed rails, it should clear the tailgate?

  • Tailgate down but make sure you are backing in straight especially with an 8' bed or you risk hitting the front storage door with your tailgate. I did this on our last FW after I went from a 6.5' bed to 8', knocked a nice hole in the door.
  • Tailgate down to hitch and unhitch. Tailgate up when driving so you have turning clearance. That’s why you’ll see aftermarket tailgates with the notches for fivers to hitch without dropping the tailgate. Enjoy the new rig. I’m new to the fifth wheel also but pretty simple after the first time.
