Towing

My wife and I just bought our first RV. 39 ft forest river wolf pack. Converted the fifth wheel attachment to a goose neck. When we pick up the trailer to bring it home, it was apparent that we had a towing issue. It was as if the hitch was not secured around the ball. A lot of fore and aft movement in the trailer. Bumping us down the road. I checked all connections and it all seemed secure. Got it to the lot and parked it. Unhooked and checked the ball. It had a 1/4 of an inch or more movement. The gooseneck is a doublepin Curt set up. Tow vehicle is a 2015 3500 Silverado HD with 6.6 diesel. Help!!! We won't be taking the trailer out unless we fix something!!
  • Thanks to all for the help. Thanks for the advice and links. Got the door problem solved and tackling the truck issues tomorrow. Take care. Drive safe and talk to you all later
  • rdwelch2, it doesn't always make sense to us as to why things just don't start out right. At least you are facing the facts and doing the necessary things to be and feel safe on your trips.
Soon you and your wife will be RVing with pride.
I know you probably have already conquered the broken key problem. A while back the main door key would work in other RVs. If this is the case now, maybe you can borrow a neighbor's key.
I always know if I have a break down or emergency, I will do something to take care of the problem. There is always help someplace.
  • About 35 miles. One hour by back roads. Right now we came up with another issue. We went to take some measurements this afternoon and the key to the door got stuck and will not unlock the front door. Its been nothing but a sick comedy since we started this RV journey and it hasn't been fun at all! 1st pickup day we were told during predeliver checks the a.c. was popping the cb. After we were told take an hour to go eat its be fixed. When we came back they said they needed to order another a.c. it would be ready tomorrow. Got the call to come get it late in the afternoon. By the time they called we were doing other things. Couldn't make so we would get it tomorrow. When we got there the next day it wasn't ready. Finally 4 hours later and a walk through as we were signing that paperwork we were told the oven didn't work and they are ordering another. 7 to 10 days for that! We went ahead and took it and found the problem towing. Today the key to the door wouldn't work and broke off! Can't even get in the **** thing! Not happy right now. Funny in a sick way! Ill never buy a thing from them again!
  • How far is the dealer? Any chance you could take it back (slowly) and have them inspect your setup?
  • Ball is right size. 2 5/16 in. It's a Reese adapter for the gooseneck. I appreciate all the input referencing gooseneck versus 5th wheel. So darn confusing and a hundred people will have their 100 preferences. The reason I picked gooseneck is the vehicle was already set up for it and the sales and service people did not voice any negative points to a goose neck. Its always after the fact you start to find the negatives. Thanks to all! Anybody looking for a gooseneck adapter? I got one!
  • What size is that gooseneck...........2" or 2 5/16" ???
What size ball do you have???

Hope you have a real strong quality built trailer frame/pin box structure!!!

Gooseneck trailers are BUILT to be towed using a ball
5th wheel trailers are built to be towed using 5th wheel hitch
Just compare a gooseneck trailer design to a 5th wheel.

Your trailer....tow it way you like.

But if you want to 'FIX' it for better towing....get a 5th wheel hitch
  • Many 5th wheels aren't meant to be used with a goose neck. They just aren't strong enough. Good luck.
