If you leave from Liberty State Park in New Jersey I would think you wouldn't have any issues. I've been to the statue three times and always went there. Very easy to get to. Would recommend you get there as early as you can. As you take the ferry, it usually stops by Ellis Island then at the Statue. I stay on the ferry and get off at the Statue first so I have a chance to actually get to the top without having to wait 3-4 hours, then go to Ellis Island on the way back.
Any online mapping should be able to give you directions from wherever you might be staying. There are a few state parks just north of the city that you could camp at.
