I live about 20 miles from Liberty Harbor. As noted, it is basically a parking lot in an urban area, but there is nothing more convenient to NYC or the Statue of Liberty. Friends from Calif. stayed there last year with their 38 foot coach and still had room for their toad. Anything 100 miles out is going to eat up a large amount of your time, especially if you're not very careful with the hours that you travel.
Don't miss the view of lower Manhattan at sunset from Liberty State Park. It's one of the prettiest views of NYC, IMHO.
