What we have learned

One thing I see on this board all the time is posters asking about a certain model of RV or just general floor plan questions. I thought we experienced campers could list some things we have found out about our RV's that have or would make life easier.

I'll start.
When looking at a unit with slides, make sure you look at it with the slides both in and out. A very large issue for us is access to the toilet and refrigerator when on the road. This allows access if we find a safe place to pull off and want to grab a drink or cold sandwich out of the fridge.

  • Don't get distracted by the "shiny stuff". Pretend to live in the unit. Sit on the toilet, stand in the shower, Sit in the chairs (can you see the tv without breaking your neck?)Lay on the bed, can you make the bed? Can you reach controls inside and out. Can you reach the dump and drain connection. Do you have to empty a compartment and pull a wall to reach you water pump and/or winterize.

    Just some thoughts.
  • Make sure you will be able to fit the RV in your driveway, if that's where you want to store it. Also, make sure your neighborhood allows you to store an RV in the driveway.

Make sure everyone involved with this purchase is on board with the idea. It's no fun going camping with miserable teenagers, and/or spouse.
  • After having the wrong capacity truck for 14 years and then buying one with more than enough capacity, I advise everyone to get more truck than they need.

The old truck was mostly white knuckle time, current truck is a dream compared to the old one. So much safer to tow with.

Practice driving or towing the RV. Find a large empty parking lot or field and practice backing, parallel parking (even with a trailer), manuvering in tight turns/campsites, panic stops, hitching and unhitching...etc. Use boxes or cones to mark pathways and parking spaces.

We are not driving sports cars or hot rods so don't expect them to perform like one. On a 10% grade you may end up at 25MPH going up or down so enjoy the scenery.
