Heading home after camping with the TC and a small cargo trailer in tow a couple summers ago we had a fun one. It was passing by the Morton, WA junction on hwy 12. We’re behind a TT who takes the right turn only lane as we continue on straight going about 40-45. Just as he clears his turn and I’m probably 100 feet from the junction out pops a small SUV that want to turn left across my path. I could already see the front and right side of my truck, camper and trailer getting wiped out in what seemed like stopped time.
I steered left about most of a lane width as the driver came to a stop again part way into my lane. The problem was then the 5th wheel in the oncoming left turn lane. So just as soon as I left my lane and cleared the SUV I cranked back into my lane. I cut somewhat close to the 5er to minimize the turn but was under control. I don’t recall hitting my brakes very hard as it would have been pointless anyway and I instead focused on steering through. My sister and brother-in-law were behind us with a truck and TT. They keyed up the CB to ask if I needed to stop to change pants after seeing that go down.
Contrary to popular belief, the SRW truck plus 4k lb camper and 2k lb trailer handled perfectly with just some body lean through a significant high speed slalom. As wa8yxm mentioned previously, the stress comes after the event.
