? Trading 5er for Cl-A?

In the very beginning stages of considerations. Have NOT been to any dealers yet, don't have any real idea of what's available and what they all cost. Got time to get that figured out.
Any recommendations for trading the 5er for a Class A?
Sell both separately?
Trade 5er only and sell dually separate?
Trade both 5er & TV at dealership?
  • I sold my TT first and then bought my class A when I found what I was looking for at a price I could afford. I am planning to full-time in about a year, dependent on how fast I can sell my house. Since I had a S&B, I could go without a RV for a few months. Sold my TT in 3 days to a friend who was wanting to upgrade. I could have sold for a bit more, but ease of sale made it worth the little extra I would have made advertising and selling it for more. I then could concentrate on finding the Class A floorplan I wanted, at the price I could afford. This allowed me to jump immediately when I found one available. When I went to look at it, dealer said she had three people wanting to see it, if I didn't get it. I had given a credit card deposit the first day it was advertised and prior to previous owner delivering to dealer. I kept my truck and still have it. I will trade it later in the year for something that I can tow behind MH.
  • Just make sure you are considering a trade for the right reasons.
Before I retired we work camped in a fiver since we were in one place 4-6 months.
Now retired we go with a class "C since we move about a lot.
You probably already know this so I may be preaching to the choir.

  • Just did this, Found the class A we wanted 900 miles from home, two days before we were ready to head back. Ended up trading both the 5'ver and the truck. Figure I left about 10k + on the table, but there was no way my wife was going to drive that truck back. Sometimes you have to pick your battles.............

Two years ago I was at the point you are. I had a nice 1ton truck that was paid for and a nice 35' 5th wheel that was not paid for. I went about it this way. Went to dealers and looked around without saying much about tradeins or fianicing. Once I made my decission on the new class A I told the dealer I wanted to trade my 5th wheel and tow truck in. Lets face it the dealer is not going to loose money, but for me it was easier than trying to sell the old myself. After some good old give and take I was happy with the finial result.

  • Been there, done that. Before you make a decision, price a full set of 12R22.5 truck tires, an oil change at the big truck shop, and a set of airbags. That diesel pickup will start to look VERY nice in comparison.

  • We will be in the same shoes as you in five years or so. We love our truck, it's paid for, and not sure I would want to let it go. The FW on the other hand can go. We are not 100% sure on a DP or upgrading trucks to an MDT and a new FW. Wife likes this option, but she won't have to drive the MDT around when not towing. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
  • Dcmac no one can tell you wha to do, only give their experiences. Bottom line it depends on how much it means financially to you vs ease of transaction.
  • Time! That is your biggest consideration. You can sell anything privately, but how much time are you willing to wait for someone to come along. They might show up at your door 15 minutes after you make something available for sale, and it may take 15 years.

With a dealer, you know they will take it, but at what cost (or loss) to you.

So the balance is time. One is certain (right now) but a lower sale price to move them. The other is uncertain time, but may result in a higher sale price in the end. And one thing you have to remember, time is not your friend. Every day you own an RV or a vehicle, every day it looses value. So there will come a time, if not sold immediately, any decent resale value may not be so "decent" any more.

It's a fine balance. Your willingness to play the wait game will drive your decision.
