Now that our kids are grown up and out of the house I regret not taking them out West. We had a lot of great vacations at the beach and camped locally. Good times for sure but nothing beats the experiences of Yellowstone, Cody and the Badlands.
Figure on 4 days in Yellowstone and then plan the rest of the your trip looking at other places along the way. Making the drive each day closer to 8 hours.
Last year my wife and I went to Yellowstone. We stopped in Iowa and slept behind a McDonalds the first day. Made it to Wall SD the second day. Saw the Badlands the following day. Then spent a couple days looking the black hills and Mount Rushmore, then to Cody WY for two days. Then to Yellowstone for four days. It was a great trip and I know the kids would have loved it.
