I think your crazy. I just completed a 3,550 mile trip from VA to CO and back in 13 days. We drove no more than about 450 miles per day. This made for a LONG day. Most days were around 300 miles. I felt like we mostly just drove around and didn't really stop and do much of anything. We were constantly stopping for fuel, food, bathroom, etc. I was only getting about 10 MPG so that's a fuel stop every day at least. Some days two fuel stops.
I don't think I'll take a trip like this again any time soon. I'll wait until I have more vacation time and older children. My kids are 3 and 5. It may be somewhat different with your older children but I doubt any of you will really enjoy the trip that much.
Professional truck drivers don't often drive 600 miles a day.
IMO this is some VERY SAGE ADVICE from someone with a closet full of the proverbial "T-Shirts":E While many years later you might look back on it as a memorable trip, but you will IMO not enjoy it in the moment so to speak.
Call me crazy or "ole-fashioned", but I'm one that continually shakes my head in disbelief every time when at Disney World I see parents dragging their one, two or three year olds around at the end of the day either grumpy beyond belief or passed out from exhaustion all in the name of trying to "experience something" that the one it's meant for won't remember 1% of it next year let alone years later.
