Why not just fly into Cody,Wy , rent a car, & stay at one of the hotels in Yellowstone if that's the vacation theme ?
If you're paying for it, I'd love to go.
5 airplane tickets to Cody, renting a vehicle large enough for all of us, hotel stays, and eating out for every meal is out of my budget. It's way cheaper to pay for gas to get there.
You can't afford the trip
With that reasoning, no family would ever travel anywhere...
For fun, I looked up the flight from Detroit to Cody. Cheapest I found, in October, was $547.00 per person. My guess is it would be higher in the summer Multiply that by 5, and you're already at $2735. Then, the rental car big enough to hold a family 5 and their stuff, say, $50 a day to be on the light side, so that's $600. Hotels, probably would need 2 rooms, but let's be generous and say they found cheap $100 rooms (unlikely somewhere like Yellowstone in summer, but anyway), so at $200/night, for 12 nights, that's $2400. I have no idea what eating out for every meal would cost for a family of 5, but let's estimate $30 per meal. So $60 a day for 12 days. So that's $720. So total, your plan would cost, on the low end, $6,455. That doesn't even count the gas in the rental car.
A trailer trip would cost half that or less. But yet you're telling him he shouldn't take his family on a trip because he can't spend over $1000 per person on the trip? That's ridiculous.
